Press release date: January 3, 2022

J1939 Software Stack to Support CAN FD

January 3, 2022, Terre Haute, IN – Simma Software, Inc. announced today an addition to their J1939 software capabilities with the release of a J1939-22 software stack. Having supported the J1939 protocol since inception of the company, this is an important addition to the firm’s J1939 software suite.

The J1939-22 standard from SAE describes the data link layer using the flexible data rate as defined in ISO 11898-1. Commonly called CAN FD, the flexible data rate capability in CAN is implemented as a transport layer in order to allow for functional safety, cybersecurity, and extended transport capability. J1939 FD includes several advantages verses standard CAN including: up to 64 byte data payloads, multiple PGNs can be combined into a single CAN FD frame, and higher bit rates. This increases packets per second (PPS) and network throughput.
